A range of GPS speedtrap detectors are available from
various manufacturers including Morpheous, Origin, Blackspot Interactive,
and now Snooper. The GPS devices have an advantage over a standard radar
detector in that some speedtraps are not operated by radar and so the
only way to 'detect' them is to have them on a database which can be downloaded
into an in-car GPS device which will warn you when approaching the speedtrap.
The downside of a GPS device is the inability to detect temporary speedtraps
such as mobile police laser guns. So a good laser detector would be recommended
to be used in conjunction with a GPS device and now a the Road Angel and
the Snooper S6-R come with a laser detector, in fact the Snooper S6-R
has radar detection as well.
GPS speedtrap locators are fast becoming the biggest
selling in car gadget available as an aftermarket product. They where
first introduced about 2-3 years ago by Morpheous Ltd. since their Geodesy
was released at that time there have been about half a dozen new ones
to choose from including their own Road Pilot and Micro Road Pilot. Others
include the Origin Blue i and Origin b2, the Snooper S6-R Neo and Snooper
S4-R Neo and the Blackspot Road Angel. The Radar Detector Shop is able
to give expert advice on the types of speedtrap out there and also what
is available to warn you that you may be in danger of breaking the speed
limit and getting a speeding ticket. It's a very complicated subject and
sound advice is essential before parting with your hard earned cash.
Driving is essential to many people's livelihoods and to know where "accident
blackspots" and speedtraps are located can save not only your licence
but also your job. Having a speedtrap detector will tend to reduce your
average speed and make you a more cautious driver, which bears out the
Mori survey which suggested that speedtrap detector users tend to have
24% less accidents than other road users, it also showed that the majority
of speedtrap detector users tend to be professional drivers going about
their daily business and not the boy racer type that most people associate
with reckless driving and speeding.

Road
Angel Classic
Road Angel is a sleek black driving
aid and is the only true accident blackspot locator on the market
as well as having one of the clearest LCD panels on the market.
It gives enough information on a screen that doesn't make the unit
too big for the dashboard. Like the Morpheous Geodesy Plus it has
an inbuilt antenna and so as long as it is on the dashboard it needs
no additional antenna. It is directional meaning tha it won't give
unwanted warnings for Gatso cameras facing the wrong way. The blackspot
warnings may at first thought seem to be a gimick but you would
be unwise to ignore them, proceeding with caution and looking for
the hazard is the more sensible approach and may just prove it's
worth for that safety feature alone. When a hazard is within the
range that you have set, the backlit green LCD with change to red
and a warning tone will be emitted, building to a crescendo as the
hazard is reached and then falling silent and changng back to a
green display as it is passed. It will also display whether it is
a fixed, mobile, average speed speedtrap or an accident blackspot.

the company. The display is clear and easy to read giving the type
of speedtrap camera, the distance to it in increments of 50 metres,
the number of GPS satellites locked onto, the compass direction
of travel and even the time.
