What is Satellite Navigation?
The Global Positioning System is a satellite navigation system. It is operated by the U.S. Department of Defence but is available to anyone wanting to use the system.
GPS can be accessed by users on the land, sea or in the air, it cannot be accessed underground or underwater as a clear signal to the satellites is required.
The system, which was developed by the US Department of Defence for military purposes, is reputed to have cost $10 billion.
The system relies on 24 satellites which orbit the earth roughly twice each day at around 12,000 miles high, the satellites provide even coverage around the entire surface of the planet and at any one time up to 10 satellites maybe visible to a GPS receiver.
Satellite Navigation works using the GPS signals to plot a route from a start and end point placed in to a GPS device. As the route is travelled the receiver’s location is checked every second and any changes are calculated. If the vehicle the receiver is inside becomes lost or takes a wrong time then the unit calculates any changes and offers directions accordingly.
Satellite Navigation systems can also be programmed
with updated and additional information such as speed camera locations.
